Aoraki Bound Background

"Aoraki Matatū…
Holding firm to what defines Ngāi Tahu"

In 2005 a team commenced work on a course that combines Ngāi Tahu cultural values, tikanga, mahinga kai and te reo with Outward Bound's exceptional skills and 45 years of experience delivering adventure-based experiential education and development. A pilot course was completed successfully in March 2006 followed by a comprehensive evaluation process. To date, eight courses have been run, with a total of 91 students participating.

Logo

The logo is made up of three elements: A red feather, Aoraki (Mt Cook), and winding river.

The colour red is historically used to represent leadership, chieftainship, and therefore, mana and rangatiratanga. The feather or plume was also used traditionally to symbolise a person's prestige, status or beauty and can be found in a number of Ngāi Tahu proverbs and metaphors. The red feather in this logo symbolises the project's intent of building cultural leaders for our future. It also symbolises the setting and attaining of personal goals no matter how high they may be.

Apart from the obvious significance of Aoraki to Ngāi Tahu, the mountain also represents the solid base and heritage from which the values of our future leaders develop. Aoraki represents challenges and obstacles individuals encounter on their path to personal achievement.

The awa represents the greenstone trails of the project and the link to one's past. It symbolises having knowledge of your past and walking the path of your ancestors. The koru within the river are two interlocking spirals, one the past, the other the future.

Whakataukī

"Ekea ka tiritiri o te moana…
Ascend to the heights of your aspirations"

The Ngāi Tahu name for The Southern Alps is Kā Tiritiri o te Moana and this has been used as a key element in the projects motto: "Ekea kā tiritiri o te moana", to encourage people to ascend to the heights of their aspirations.
