Tenure Review

Tenure Review is administered by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) under the Crown Pastoral Land Act (1998). There are 304 Pastoral Leases in Te Waipounamu administered by LINZ. Pastoral Leases allow grazing of the land for pastoral farming purposes. Leaseholders are subject to a range of restrictions on other use of the land.

Tenure Review allows lessees to freehold part of their pastoral lease while areas on Pastoral Leases that contain Significant Inherent Values are protected via a diversity of protection mechanisms such as Conservation Areas, Recreation Reserves and Conservation Covenants.

Toitū te Whenua co-ordinates Papatipu Rūnaka involved in Tenure Review inlcuding preparing Cultural Value Reports, organising inspections of Pastoral Leases and co-ordinating submissions on Preliminary Proposals. Toitū te Whenua also works closely with LINZ to ensure that appropriate processes are in place to ensure Ngāi Tahu values associated with Pastoral Leases are adequately protected.
